On January 10, 1969, Stonybrook Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS), one of the groups that formed United Methodist Women in the early 1970s and is now called United Women in Faith, was granted permission to use the patterns developed by Francis K. Spencer of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, VA. She designed the Chrismons from Christian symbols of Monograms used by early Christians. The Lutheran Church of the Ascension owns the trademark and copyrights for the Chrismons. Chrismon is a combination of parts of two words, Christ and Monogram. Each Chrismon has a symbolic meaning. The Chrismon ornaments that you see on the Chrismon Tree were handmade by Stonybrook WSCS.
